Sharon UMC Response to COVID-19 (3/15/20)

Sunday, March 15th, 2020

Sharon UMC,

Our council met this morning and we have made some decisions with the insight of medical professionals and those who dearly want the best for the future of our congregation. With the information we have, these are the best decisions we felt with at this time.

Before I throw you a lot of information, let me start with two things: first, a reminder that through all things, we have a God who’s love endures and perseveres through all things; and second, to this situation we find ourselves in, a consideration I found helpful that when this is all over it will be impossible to know if we overreacted and did too much, but it will be quite apparent if we under reacted and did too little. Here are our measures going forward:

  1. We are canceling or postponing all church events through at least the end of March. This includes Sunday worship services, any group that meets at the church, or any events scheduled at the church as well as any that may be requested to be scheduled in our church in this time frame.
  2. We will be spending time diligently working on creating virtual services for you to join in together on Sunday mornings as well as devotions and studies. If this is not a possibility for you, we will be working on print copies to be mailed out or DVD copies to be shared and delivered.
  3. We will be working hard to remain connected to all our members and those who call Sharon UMC home. This includes connecting via phone calls, emails, and messaging. We want to remain a church even when we cannot assemble as one physically together. If you are not getting information or would like to, please call or email us with your correct contact information as we begin to gather updated information as best as possible.
  4. We will keep office hours as normal as possible for the foreseeable future (10:00 am-1:00 pm from Monday to Thursday). You can reach us in the office at 319-364-3688 or by emailing SharonUMC13@gmail.com.
  5. Tithing can be done electronically by emailing Dustin Box, our treasurer, at dustin_boxa@hotmail.com, mailing it in to 1809 18th Street SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404, or waiting until this hiatus is over.
  6. We recognize in one hand the ability for some to give and some to be in need. Our food pantry is stocked with food. If you or a neighbor are in need, please let us know. If you find a need that we may be able to help with, we want to the best we can, including the spiritual and emotional needs of those grieving or feeling alone in this time.

This may feel like a deep hurt for many, and I hope we miss being together and to long for that day when this wait will be over. However, let us use this opportunity as a chance to find God amid change. May we rediscover in new ways the Savior who came to usher in comfort in our loneliness, strength in our weakness, and hope to the hopeless.

May Jesus Christ be our foundation in all times and days, but especially seasons like this. I look forward to talking with you soon.

Pastor Nick
